    Herman Alberts

    Solis Environmental

    Herman is a Senior EAP at Solis- Environmental and is based in the City of Tshwane. Herman obtained his B.Sc. Hons (Geography) at the University of the Free State. He has more than 12 years’ experience in the field of environmental management and was an Environmental Officer with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) Chief Directorate: Integrated Environmental Authorisations for more than 10 years. Herman is passionate about the interpretation of environmental legal requirements and is a registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner with EAPASA.

  • Lukas Erasmus (Researcher at UFS)

    Lukas Erasmus

    Researcher at UFS

    Dr. Lucas Erasmus received his M.Sc. degree in 2018 from the University of the Free State for his dissertation “Developing an optical thermometry system for phosphor materials”. In 2018, he joined the University of the Free State Physics Department, where he is currently a Junior Researcher. His research mainly focuses on photonic materials, solar cells, and light emitting diodes. To date, he has authored and co-authored 13 publications and has an h-index of 7. He recently completed a joint doctorate between the University of the Free State and Ghent University in Belgium, titled “Luminescent solar concentrators – where Sm2+ doped phosphors shine”. He is also interested in science communication and is a part-time presenter at the Naval Hill Planetarium, developing and presenting shows on various scientific topics.

    Louis Lagrange

    Energy Engineer at UFS

    Louis Lagrange is a board member and past chair of the South African Institute of Agricultural Engineers. He holds a B.Eng Agricultural Engineering degree from the University of Pretoria as well as a M.Eng Agricultural Engineering also from the University of Pretoria. He is an Agricultural Engineers, who specialises in Project Management, Food Processing Engineering and Energy Engineering. During his 12 years with Agrelek, a subsidiary of Eskom, he was Project Manager: Research and Development, Portfolio Manager: Food Processing and Agrelek Manager. He is currently the Head of Department for Engineering Science at the University of the Free State. He specialises in energy, food processing and environmental biosystems engineering. Louis has a strong passion for education, as he spent 7 years at the University of KwaZulu-Natal as a senior lecturer in the School of Bio-resources Engineering and Environmental Hydrology. His passion for education is also prevalent through his facilitation of strategic planning groups, and through training of self-authored and international energy management related courses.

    Christia is an EAP at Solis Environmental and based in Orkney. Christia has an Honours degree in in Environmental Sciences with the focus on Environmental Management. She has a passion for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the integration thereof in the field of Environmental Impact Assessment and decision-making process. She has 3 years’ experience in the field of impact assessment and 5 years’ experience in the GIS field. She is dedicated to the protection of the environment through sustainable development.

    Monde Soni

    Electrical Engineer at Eskom

    Monde is an ECSA-registered Professional Engineer and a Senior Member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE).

    He received his BSc Eng (Electrical) from University of KwaZulu-Natal and MSc Eng (Electrical) from the University of Cape Town. Monde started his career as a lecturer in 2007. He has worked as a power system planner and a manager within Eskom Distribution and is currently a chief engineer in power system planning specialising in load forecasting and analysis, bulk energy storage integration studies and renewable energy resource integration. He was an elected member of the Council for SAIEE from 2017 to 2023. Monde is the Chairman of the SAIEE Load Research Chapter.

    He was awarded the Engineer of the Year 2019 by SAIEE.

    Carli Van Niekerk

    Solis Environmental

    Carli is the owner of Solis-Environmental and is a registered EAP based in Potchefstroom. Carli is passionate about the practice of IA as well as teaching and research. She established Solis in 2007 and has more than 16 years’ experience in coordinating and managing EIA and environmental management projects. The skills she obtained from working in practice include specialist knowledge on streamlining legal processes, an understanding of the management of pollutants in the environment, and risk assessment processes as well as working collaboratively across sectors and disciplines with different stakeholders including private developers, industry, and on the effectiveness of EIA specifically for solar power projects in South Africa.
